National Parks and Nature Reserves: A South African Field Guide

This guide encompasses the most prominent features of 43 national parks, reserves and wilderness areas in South Africa. The parks and reserves are divided into chapters which in turn are sequenced into sections corresponding to the provinces in which they are located. Each chapter opens with a description of the position and physical aspects of the park or reserve. This is followed by a brief review of the sanctuary's history, from its ancient past to modern times, and an overview of the geological features, including where in the park or reserve some of its more striking formations can be seen. There is also an account of the vegetation, with an emphasis on the diversity of vegetation types, and scientific names for trees and flowers are provided to eliminate misidentification of species. Commonly encountered as well as more reclusive wildlife species - from mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians to, on occasion, fish and invertebrates - are covered, as well as their habitats. Scattered throughout each chapter are several information and fact panels that highlight additional attractions of the park or reserve.
